Chatbots won’t replace UI. AI-native SaaS needs a shared DSL abstraction layer.

Two years ago, a bold prediction took over the tech world: The UI would disappear.
Large Language Models, many believed, would collapse complex software into a single conversational interface. Menus, dashboards, and workflows would be replaced by chat.
That did not happen.
Instead, the UI reasserted itself, not as the only interface, but as an essential one. What we are discovering is more interesting and more challenging:
The future of SaaS is not UI or AI.
It is AI-native and multi-interface by design.
Early discussions framed the future of software as a binary choice:
Traditional SaaS with structured interfaces.
AI chat replacing everything.
That framing was wrong.
Humans still need visual structure, context, and control.
AI agents need explicit, machine-readable abstractions to operate deterministically.
Bolting a chatbot onto an existing product does not make it AI-native.
It simply adds a new surface on top of old assumptions.
Truly AI-native software treats UI and AI as equal citizens, operating on the same core logic through different interfaces.
Most SaaS products were built on a simple assumption:
The UI is the software.
Business logic is embedded in UI workflows, screen-driven services, and implicit, click-based behavior. This works for humans.
It breaks for AI.
An LLM cannot reliably operate within or across software when logic is scattered across UI code paths, actions are implicit rather than explicit, and capabilities are not exposed in a declarative form.
That is why so much "AI-powered SaaS" looks impressive in demos and fragile in real work.
Presentation tools make this painfully clear.
LLMs can generate high-quality presentations in HTML with clean structure and flow because HTML is declarative and lets models express intent directly.
PowerPoint and Google Slides are different. Despite the scale and investment behind Microsoft and Google, models still struggle to translate intent into precise slide structure, maintain layout consistency, or apply complex formatting deterministically.
This is not a model limitation.
It is an abstraction problem.
HTML is declarative and textual. For an LLM, it effectively acts as a domain-specific language that defines what should exist.
PowerPoint and Google Slides are fundamentally UI-driven systems. Their logic lives in sequences of clicks, hidden state, and implicit behaviors. There is no clean, expressive representation of a slide that software can fully operate.
Microsoft and Google do not lack intelligence, data, or models.
Their presentation products were simply never designed to be operated by software, which is exactly why deeply integrating AI into them is so hard.
Without a clean abstraction layer, software falls into one of two failure modes.
The Incumbents’ Trap
Decades of business logic are frozen inside UI-driven code. Extracting that logic into something AI can reason over is slow, risky, and expensive. They have users and data, but no usable abstraction layer.
The AI Startups’ Trap
Many AI-first tools are great at generating a first draft. But the moment users want to edit, iterate, collaborate, or apply constraints, friction appears. Without a shared abstraction layer, prompts replace workflows and productivity plateaus.
Different symptoms.
Same root cause.
To build truly AI-native software, we have to stop treating the interface as the product. Instead, the product must be defined by a Domain-Specific Language (DSL): a declarative, abstract layer that houses every ounce of business logic.
In this model, the DSL is the "brain," and the interfaces are just "limbs."
This isn’t just about making things "work" with AI, it’s about predictability. When software is defined by a DSL, the AI doesn't have to "guess" what a button does by looking at pixels. It reads the declaration, understands the intent, and executes with precision.
The New Standard: Full parity across interfaces
Ironically, as AI becomes more capable, the role of the UI becomes more critical.
Humans need:
In this model, the UI becomes the control plane for human and AI collaboration.
It is where humans review, adjust, guide, and co-create with AI agents.
